What IP65 protects against

The first digit, 6, means the enclosure is dust-tight. The second digit, 5, means it resists low-pressure water jets from any direction: the test uses a 6.3 mm nozzle delivering 12.5 litres per minute from 2.5 to 3 metres for at least three minutes.

That combination makes IP65 the practical minimum for most outdoor electrical equipment: LED fixtures, junction boxes, cameras and enclosures that face rain and hose-down cleaning but are never submerged.

What IP65 does NOT protect against

IP65 is a jet rating, not an immersion rating. It does not protect against being submerged; that needs IP67 or IP68. It also does not cover the more powerful jets of IP66, nor corrosion, chemicals or impact.

In UK bathrooms, wiring rules (BS 7671, Section 701) commonly call for IP65 in the shower zone even though the minimum there is lower, because a dust-tight, jet-resistant fitting is a safe margin around water. Always match the fitting to the zone and to local regulations.

IP54 vs IP65

The jump from IP54 to IP65 is a jump in both digits. On solids, 5 (dust-protected, limited ingress permitted) becomes 6 (fully dust-tight). On water, 4 (splashing from any direction) becomes 5 (low-pressure jets). In plain terms, IP54 is water-resistant and IP65 is dust-tight and jet-resistant.

IP54 suits covered or lightly exposed locations, IP65 suits open outdoor use and hose-down cleaning. If a fitting will face direct rain or cleaning sprays, IP65 is the safer choice.

Is IP65 waterproof?

Can an IP65 light be used outdoors?

Can an IP65 device be pressure washed?
Not necessarily. IP65 covers low-pressure jets. Powerful pressure washing is closer to the IP66 test, and hot high-pressure cleaning is IP69K. Match the rating to the actual cleaning method.
