What IP54 protects against

The first digit, 5, means dust-protected: a limited amount of dust may enter, but not enough to interfere with operation. The second digit, 4, means the enclosure resists water splashing from any direction, tested with an oscillating spray.

That makes IP54 a common, cost-effective rating for equipment that faces dust and the occasional splash rather than direct jets or immersion: sheltered outdoor lights, cameras under eaves, control modules and many consumer devices.

Water-resistant, not waterproof

IP54 is best understood as water-resistant. It handles splashes and light rain but is not designed for hose-down jets or submersion. For open outdoor use, driven rain or cleaning sprays, step up to IP65, which is fully dust-tight and jet-resistant.

The first digit also matters: unlike the dust-tight 6 of IP65, the 5 of IP54 permits a little dust ingress, which is fine for most electronics but not for fully sealed applications.

IP54 is water-resistant and dust-protected - a step below the dust-tight, jet-resistant IP65.

IP44 vs IP54

Both share the same water level, 4 (splashing from any direction). The difference is the first digit. IP44 protects only against solid objects larger than 1 mm (wires and tools), while IP54 adds dust protection: limited dust ingress that does no harm.

So IP54 is the better choice in dusty environments, while IP44 is common on indoor and covered outdoor fittings where fine dust is not a concern. Neither resists jets or immersion.

IP54 vs IP65

This is a two-step jump. On solids, dust-protected (5) becomes dust-tight (6). On water, splashing (4) becomes low-pressure jets (5). IP54 is water-resistant and suited to sheltered use; IP65 is dust-tight and jet-resistant and suited to open outdoor use and hose-down cleaning.

If a fitting will face direct rain, sprays or cleaning, choose IP65. If it is covered and only meets the odd splash, IP54 is usually enough and costs less.
